QUARANTINE PROFILE: Layke
We’ve launch a profile series to highlight how artists are spending their time during quarantine. Several times a week we’ll highlight a new artist across the globe and see how they’re keeping busy during COVID-19 lockdowns.
Layke describes her music as “left of center pop with an extra hint of edge”. We can’t disagree! Layke is well on her way to be a LGBTQIA+ icon. Layke just released her new single ‘Bad Things’ off the upcoming EP Frequency, out in October. With her kiIler signature style we can’t wait to see what’s next for her. Check out what Layke has been up to during lockdown in our latest Quarantine Profile. Warning: cute dog content ahead!
Favorite quarantine snack:
One of two things. If I want something sweet I love strawberries and whipped cream. If I want something salty or tangy I’m absolutely obsessed with the Thai Lime & Chili Cashews from Trader Joe’s. My absolute favorite thing in that store.
Are there any livestreams you’ve been watching or inspired by?
There’s been so much music being live streamed and remote performances it’s been absolutely amazing. I’ve just been trying to see it all and take it all in. Sooooo many great talented fantastic artists & performances it’s hard to pick favorites. I definitely think the BET awards just a few weeks ago were fabulous! Three performances that really really stood out to me were Chloe X Halle, Megan Thee Stallion, & Masego.
What is keeping you happy:
I definitely think it’s the little things in life not to sound cliche but I do. My pup Zoltan is a huge source of joy and happiness for me. He’s the most adorable shitzu terrier poodle mix and he’s my little love bug. Also creating is keeping me happy. I’m always working on my art and planning and conceptualizing so this time is definitely giving me room to explore that.
What’s something you’ve been cooking?
I’ve been getting really into cooking different types of squash in different ways so either with olive oil and salt and pepper and a nice Bolognese sauce with an acorn squash or you can also do it with sage and brown butter and it’s so simple. And I’ve really been getting into using cabbage as noodles since I can’t do noodles. Because of my Crohn’s disease wheat is not my friend lol so I’ve been using cabbage for the noodles and it’s really really yummy :) And both of these things keep really well for leftovers which is important right now. I cook a lot of Italian food for sure. I come from a very Italian family.
Songs / albums you’ve had on repeat:
Diana Gordon’s newest release Wasted Youth. My fave track is ‘Rollin’. She’s fantastic. An amazing producer writer singer everything she’s just so talented.
Another artist I’ve been listening to a lot is Kim Petras. Her album Clarity is great and I’m loving her newest single ‘Malibu’. A total summer bop :)
Something new you’ve been working on:
I have a new EP Frequency coming out in October and I’ll be releasing singles throughout the summer up to the release starting with ‘Bad Things’ on July 24th.
The quarantine has definitely made me reevaluate the way I do a lot of things because I (like everyone else) have had to. So it’s definitely pushing me creatively to think outside the box and work with what I have and I’m loving that aspect. I just shot the music video for ‘Bad Things’ at my house and it turned out so spectacular I’m beyond excited for people to see it. And I’ll be filming the videos for my other three singles ‘Tonight Can’t Be the Last Time’, ‘XOXO’, and ‘Going Out On a High’ the same way. I’m really enjoying the process.
